Frequently asked questions
What is the church fiscal year?
The church fiscal year runs from January 1 through December 31.
Why should I pledge if I already put money in the offering basket?
Funds collected in the offering basket each week do support Old South's life and mission, and are greatly appreciated. However, pledges are critical because they enable us to plan responsibly and to establish an operating budget for the coming year, just as you might establish a personal budget based on your expected income. We also believe pledging is an important Christian spiritual practice, enabling us to grow intentionally in gratitude and generosity in every part of our lives.
What happens to the money I pledge?
Your pledge supports everything we experience at Old South: worship, pastoral care, youth and adult programing, outreach programs, maintenance of our beloved buildings, and much more.
Are there alternative ways to make a pledge?
You may realize a tax advantage by paying your pledge with appreciated stock. This can be accomplished by having your broker transfer the stock to United Church Funds, the national UCC organization that oversees Old South’s investments. United Church Funds then sells your appreciated stock and transfers the proceeds to the Church’s local checking account. To learn more about this process, please call United Church Funds at 1-877-806-4989. If you elect to use this mechanism for giving, please notify one of our financial secretaries when you initiate the transfer – that way they can properly credit your Old South account.
How much should I give?
The Biblical standard of tithing, which means giving one tenth of our income, is a familiar benchmark for many. Others may be familiar with the concept of proportional giving – making a commitment to give a specific percentage of your income to the Church. We encourage each of our members to give as they are able.
