We are passionate about music.

Picture
Some say that music is how we pray best at Old South! Our taste in music is as varied as the God who created us. On any given Sunday you might hear us worship the living God through hymns, Taize chants, or old spirituals. We primarily use The New Century Hymnal, which features many traditional melodies and lyrics that have been gently updated to convey a more expansive understanding of God and incorporate inclusive and pacifist language. You will also find "The Green Book" in our pews, which is a compilation of sacred songs and rounds, penned by our late, beloved choir master, Joel Hayden.

We are blessed by the wealth of musical talent in our congregation. In addition to our adult choir, accompanied by our organist, Patricia Hayden, our music-makers also include a women's drumming circle, high school fiddlers, a children's bell choir, a new, pick-up bluegrass band, and the band Shepherd's Pie. During the summer we welcome individuals and groups to offer "special music" in lieu of an anthem. This allows us to celebrate the many talents of our people while the choir enjoys a much deserved break.

Adult choir: Our choir sings weekly, September through June, and practices every Wednesday at 7 pm in the Matthew Room and before worship on Sundays. New members are joyfully welcomed! Contact the church office for more information.

Children's hand bell choir and orchestra: Several times a year, children share their musical gifts with the congregation, typically during holiday worship services or on Intergenerational Sundays. Contact Jodie Gunther for more information.

InnerRhythm: Our women's drumming circle meets weekly on Tuesdays at 5:30 pm in the Chapel.  Contact Karyl Condit to learn more.

Special Music: We are abundantly blessed with musicians. Throughout the year, and especially in the summer, we draw from our deep pool of talent, including young fiddlers, a 92-year-old saxophonist, a bluegrass group, and so many more! Do you have gifts to offer? Contact the office to sign up.
